Song-Kol sits on a wide plateau at just over 3,000 metres, reached by gravel switchbacks from Kochkor or the Moldo-Ashuu pass. From June to September herders bring their horses, sheep and yaks up to its shores and live in yurts, as their families have for centuries.

There are no villages and no electricity grid here, only open grassland, a huge sky and the lake changing colour with the weather. A night in a yurt camp, an evening walk along the shore and a horse ride in the morning are the heart of most of our routes.

Don't miss

  • Night in a family yurt camp
  • Horse riding along the shore
  • Star-filled skies with no light pollution
  • Herders' summer life up close
